Automation

How to understand what to automate first

Automation is useful when it frees up time and makes an important process predictable. Start with repeatable work, not a technology.

Look for repetition

A strong candidate is a task performed many times a week by clear rules: moving requests, sending updates, creating a report or checking data.

If every case needs a creative decision, describe and simplify the process before automating it.

Measure the cost of manual work

Count time, delays, errors and reliance on a single employee.

  • How often is the task repeated?
  • How long does one repeat take?
  • What do mistakes cost?
  • What happens if the responsible person is unavailable?

Start with a focused result

A form, notification, data flow or report can prove value before a larger system is needed.
